WASHINGTON, D.C. --  Congressman Russ Fulcher released the following statement on the latest developments out of Hong Kong:

"The arrest of more than a dozen former legislators and democratic leaders in Hong Kong recently is both disappointing and wrong.

Hong Kong was promised autonomy by China in the 1984 agreement with the United Kingdom. China needs to live up to its end of the bargain, and not allow the Chinese Communist Party and others in the Beijing government to strip away the core constitutional rights of the people of Hong Kong.

I condemn the actions taken against these former legislators and pro-democracy leaders, reminding the government of Hong Kong (and Beijing) that I will work with my colleagues to ensure that the provisions of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act we passed last year are firmly put into place."
