WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Russ Fulcher released the following statement on the House FISA reauthorization vote:

“I have long defended the rights of each individual American to have privacy and protection from unwarranted surveillance.

The House recently voted to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and it passed. While there were improvements in some areas, enhanced penalties for abusing the system and additional layers of certification from the DOJ and FBI, I do not think that it went far enough to address the main issues within FISA -- and that is why I voted no.

I will continue fighting for substantive reforms to FISA, including clarification of the “reasonable expectation of privacy” standards for business records, limiting the scope of what may be collected under Section 215, and increasing overall transparency into FISA orders and FISC opinions.”
