The ‘No Kill Switches in Cars Act’ would repeal the HALT Drunk Driving law. Idaho Congressman Russ Fulcher is a primary co-sponsor of that bill. He says he understands the benefits of these devices keeping more drunk drivers off the road, but that the threats to privacy and the potential for government abuse are too great.
“This is as a driver surveillance mechanism that would allow a third party to shut off your vehicle, and frankly, there are some potential good uses for that,” said Congressman Fulcher. “My concern is that there’s a lot of potential abuses for that as well, and that’s the argument there. If it’s AI driven, for example, that’s not perfect, that can be triggered by legitimate things, maybe not legitimate things.”
Fulcher said he was concerned about the imperfections of the system and the potential for abuse.
